Post-Civil War Amendments

 

13th Amendment — December 6, 1865

Abolishes slavery anywhere in the United States.

14th Amendment — July 9,1868 Civil Rights Act of 1866

1) Defines citizenship rights; 2) Protects against state abridgments of “the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States”; 3)  Forbids the states to deny to any person life, liberty, or property without due process of law; 4)States duty not to deny “equal protection of the laws” to any person within their jurisdictions.

15th Amendment — February 3, 1870

Denies the states the right to abridge the right to vote on the basis of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
